Friday Video: Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson – Scream

Today marks the one year anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death so this week’s Friday Video is a tribute to one of his greatest works, Scream. Released in 1995 and directed by Mark Romanek, the video was a collaboration between Michael and his sister, Janet, as an aggressive response to the media’s coverage of the child sexual abuse accusations he faced in 1993.  At a cost of $7 million, this remains as the most expensive video of all time.

One of the things I usually reference with the Friday Videos are the bold use of color, but this particular video’s use of black, white and gray is impactful in demonstrating the song’s message and depicts Michael’s unstable state of mind upon developing its lyrics. The stark contrasts mark the insanity and the images (smashed guitars, morphing figures, shattered glass) further work to showcase the tumultuous time in Michael’s life.
