Color Muse: Maya Freelon Asante

AOC: Where are you from?

Maya: Originally from Durham, NC, I now live and work in Baltimore, MD and Philadelphia, PA

AOC: What do you do?

Maya: I’m a visual artist who explores the complexity and beauty of the world through color.

AOC: How does color inspire you?

Maya: Bold, bright and vibrant colors inspire my work because they produce energy and evoke emotion. Blending, painting and collaging colors allows me to harness that energy for peace and love through art.

AOC: If there was one color used to describe you, what would it be and why?

Maya: All of them, since I was young I was never able to pick a favorite color!  I think we all have the ability to change colors, my goal is share beauty and light, whatever colors they may be.

AOC: Where can we find you?

The Color Muse series is a place to showcase artists, designers, fashionistas – anyone who uses color to ignite their creativity.  If you or someone you know is interested in being featured, please send an email to

Oh my goodness! Her work is absolutely beautiful! I love imaginative people, and I love the answer she gave when asked what her favorite color is! I feel the same way sometimes lol. Nice interview :)

Nice interview. I really dug what she said about people being able to change colors. I’ve been feeling that change coming on myself. Great work!

I went to school with her brother! 😉

Her work is amazing in person – I saw it in Durham years ago and was floored!

Maya is an incredible artist and person. We recently filmed her in a series about great contemporary artists of our time and she was incredible to work with. Check it out here
