Color Muse: Stephanie Matthews

AOC: Where are you from?

Stephanie: I grew up in Seattle, but I’ve called Brooklyn home for the past 3 years.

AOC: What do you do?

Stephanie: Right now I mostly paint, illustrate and collage. I like being able to work with my hands and use tangible materials.

AOC: How does color inspire you?

Stephanie: I’ve always been fascinated and inspired by nature and the way that natural design utilizes color: as a warning, as a mating call, to signal a change in season. I think that there’s an element of storytelling woven into my work, so I use color as a way to highlight certain details and draw the viewer into that story. I also love the fact that color is so subjective, what’s red to one person may be orange to someone else.

AOC: If there was one color used to describe you, what would it be and why?

Stephanie: Gold, because it has deep roots and has lived many lives.

AOC: What’s the last good book you read?

Stephanie: I recently finished The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison, which was great – moving & excellently written. I still have a thing for children’s stories though, like Faith Ringgold’s Tar Beach. The quilt-like illustrations in that book are amazing.

AOC: What’s currently playing on your iPod?

Stephanie: Erykah Badu, Hall & Oates, The Stuyvesants, Jodeci, Nina Simone, Quadron, Flying Lotus and the soundtrack to Michel Gondry’s The Science of Sleep.

AOC: Where can we find you?

Stephanie: You can check out more of my work on ColorfulRambunction.com.

I’m so happy to have Stephanie with us today.  Not only is she an amazing visual artist, but she’s also a very good friend of mine.  Thanks Steph!
