Video: Everything is a Remix

I was reminded of this awesome video this week when one of my professors mentioned that we should be copying work that inspires us in our designs.  While I was grappling with shock and confusion, he went on to say that no idea is original and that whether we liked it or not we were going to be influenced by what we see.  Why not take from work/techniques that we wanted to emulate and put our own spin on them?  Copy. Transform. Combine.

I hope you think about this the next time you’re struggling with and idea and want to mimic something you’ve already seen.  There’s no such thing as a completely original idea and in replicating it you’re going to be bringing in your insights and experiences on it and transforming it into your own.

Remember – it’s ok to copy!  :)

I think creative minds really do think alike and its natural to “copy”. When we are in art or design classes or by ourselves, we choose a subject and “copy” from different perspectives; this is what makes us stand out as individuals.

Like you said and the video, you must copy.transform.combine<— This is what makes it originally ours. :)
