Design Books – Saul Bass: A Life in Film & Design

Saul Bass: A Life in Film & Design has been all the rage since its release late last year and I’ve finally broken down to get in on all the action. Designed by Bass’s daughter, Jennifer, the 428-page volume features more than 1,400 of Bass’s illustrations, many revealed for the first time, that offer a behind the scenes look at his legacy and the creative process behind his most notable posters, title sequences, and logo designs. It’s being hailed as one of the most important design books of our time. A must read for students, professionals or anyone who is has an appreciation for design.

I just ordered it from Amazon and it’s due to come in the next 1 to 3 months (the most absurd timeline ever). I hope to share more on it when it comes in.

In the meantime, take a look at video on how the book came together here.

For more on the title sequences that made Bass the icon that he is known as today, take a look at these videos here and here.

Video: Off Book | Street Art | PBS Arts

I really enjoy stumbling upon dope street art. This PBS special features the work of Olek, a sculptor whose medium is crochet, and Swoon, a mixed media artist. Each talks about what this form of art means to them.

I think the part at the end with the 6 forms of street art that (probably) won’t get you arrested is an awesome touch to get people thinking of mediums available outside of graffiti.

Coke Celebrates Fashion

As the part of its “Tribute to Fashion” charity project, Coca Cola paired with leading Italian designers to put their take on the iconic bottle with as part of a limited edition collection. Designers who participated included Moschino, Donatella Versace, Angela Missoni, Alberto Ferreti, Consuelo Castiglioni and Etro. The collection was showcased at the Milano Fashion Centre.

Some of these are just a tad much, but hey that’s high what makes high-end fashion spectacular. If you like packaging and designer collaborations check out the Dieline’s Pinterest page dedicated to this here.

Patterned Bows

Patterned bow brooches by NaKIMuli. These reminds me of the bowties I posted by Laurent Desgrange last year except these have greater African influences.

Converse Rubber Tracks and Gorillaz Collaboration

I would love to work with a brand like Converse in some capacity. Whether that’s design or marketing/media strategy or whatever, the thought of partnering with such an innovative and forward thinking company is thrilling. Converse has equity in many places such as basketball, skating and style, but it’s their musical partnerships that really excite me.

Their Rubber Tracks studio in Brooklyn allows up and coming artists to apply for recording sessions. The Rubber Tracks schedule includes 12 recording cycles per year within a two-month window between application and studio time. Application is open to all genres of music and comes with a sound engineer or producer if artists don’t have their own. Artists will also own the content, but have the option of allowing Converse limited rights to publish it on Converse.com and their other social media channels. Did I mention that this is all free? I don’t see a downside to this at all. Those interested should apply here.

They also collaborate with mainstream artists to create special limited edition sneakers. The video below is a recent project where James Murphy, Andre 3000 and Gorillaz partnered to record a track called “DoYaThing” to promote the Chuck Taylor All Star Gorillaz Collection.

The video is brilliant. You can see take a peak behind the scenes here.

Jon Contino

I’m a huge fan of Jon Contino’s work (see past post here). He’s made some updates to his site that I thought would be fantastic to share here.

I’ve been wanting to do more sketching (especially with letterforms) to keep my mind going away from the computer, so his work is super inspiring to me.

Here is some work he’s done for Good Time restaurant.

Other various projects:

Event: THE BOX THAT ROCKS: 30 Years of Video Music Box and the Rise of Hip Hop Music & Culture

Art and hip-hop are high on my favorite things list, so I’m really excited about tomorrow’s opening event for THE BOX THAT ROCKS: 30 Years of Video Music Box and the Rise of Hip Hop Music & Culture at Brooklyn’s MoCADA.  The exhibit celebrates Video Music Box’s impact on urban music and culture. Created and hosted by hip-hop pioneer Ralph McDaniels, it’s known as a major kick-starter for several rap, R&B and reggae artists’ careers.

I don’t know how many of you remember being huddled around the TV jammin’ to those grainy videos played on the show back in the day. Good times…

If you can’t make tomorrow’s reception don’t worry the event runs through May 28th. See here for more information on the event and the artists featured.
