Friday Music Inspiration: Jinesis -The Coffee Shop

I love music. Especially beats when I’m working. The lack of lyrics allow me to just listen to the sounds while my mind focuses on the task at hand. I figured I’d once in a while share the things I listen to on here.

I’m currently bumpin’ to Bronx-based producer Jinesis’ The Coffee Shop. It was originally created as a companion to Dilla’s Donuts since it uses some of the late producers’ same sample choices chopped differently, however it now has established a respect of it’s own.

It’s available for listening and free download here. Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Sea of Shoes

I posted this picture to the AOC Tumblr last week, but I love it so much that it’s worthy of an audience here as well. “Moroccan Shoes” shot by Ebbe Sweet in Essaouira, Morocco is an 11 x 14 print of a digital photo available on Etsy.

I’m in adoration of the vivid colors and variety of patterns, textures and shapes of these shoes. Would love to pick up a pair on a visit one day.

Video: Alphabetic by Ariel Costa

I hope you all had a great weekend! I’m still recovering from it myself.

Anyway, I stumbled across this fantastic typographic video by Brazilian director, designer and animator Ariel Costa using the free font Chunk Five. With the accompanying music by Marcelo Baldin it’s lively, energetic and fun.

99% Conference 2012: Motion Graphics

The 99% Conference is an annual event that brings creative visionaries together to share ideas and talk about the steps needed to make them a reality. The event took place in NYC earlier this month on May 3rd and 4th and the motion graphics video created for it is amazing.

Every year the identity and motion graphics of the conference evolves — animating original quotations from the 2012 speakers. This year was no different and Hoefler & Frere-Jones font Forza with Pantone Warm Red U were used. With art direction by Behance’s Matias Corea and animation by Hugh Gran, the end result is beautiful and chock full of inspiration.

Loving Instagram

I joined Instagram a few months ago and I love it. I think of it as a more visual version of Twitter. I’m curious however to see how it will change with the Facebook acquisition.

If you’re on please say hi – @amandargeorge

The 50 Things Every Creative Should Know

I’ve been reading a lot of design advice these days and one of the things I like to look back on is #The50 Things Every Creative Should Know by Jamie Wieck. This list was developed last year to address the most common concerns held by graduating creatives and aimed to bridge the gap between art college and the professional world. While written for design students, a lot of the advice is relevant across industries.

Here are a few of my favorite items.

2)There is always someone better.

Being aware of what’s out there is great. It keeps you motivated to keep growing, but when it gets to a point where it’s detrimental to you and you’re overly critical of yourself you need to let this go. Just focus on perfecting your craft. The rest will fall into place.

4) You cannot score without a goal.

If you don’t know where you’re going then how will you ever get there? Have a plan. Writing it down and reviewing it often helps a great deal.  “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” – Benjamin Franklin

7) Have a positive self-image.

You are awesome and if you don’t believe this then how will anyone else? Confidence in yourself and your work is key.

22) Seek criticism, not praise.

Hearing how great you are is always nice, but another viewpoint on how your work could be stronger is always helpful. Show your work to anyone who will look at it and hear what they have to say. I often show my work to designers and non-designers alike. I don’t always take all the advice that comes in, but I love to hear how the designs are perceived. Remember you’re creating your work so that it’s shared and enjoyed be others. Why not ask for feedback?

26) Network

Networking is so key and social media makes it easier than ever to connect with like-minded individuals. I can’t tell you how many lovely people I’ve had a chance to encounter since starting this blog. Also Twitter and Instagram are also great resources when used accordingly.

50) Don’t take yourself too seriously.

While it’s important to take your work seriously, you need to make sure you lighten up and enjoy the process of creating it. Also, being well-balanced and taking down time to have a little fun has a huge impact on your work. This is something that I’m trying to really embrace these days. The spring weather and weekly bike rides with friends have helped me a lot. :)

Hope you found this useful. Check out the entire list here.

Video: LEGO Art | Off Book | PBS

I’m a big fan of LEGO art (see past sculpture post here and Tupac portrait here), so I was really happy to see this new PBS Off Book series video on this topic. Most of us have fond memories of putting these toys together as kids. It’s so exciting to see these artists take this form to a whole new level.
