Twenty2 Wallbands

Wallpaper is making a comeback and Twenty2 wallbands provide an easy alternative to add patterns to any room with only a fraction of the effort .  These 180 l x 13 w (inches) are easy to install.  Simply open the pack, peel off the band and stick onto the wall.  The 5′ long strips can also be cut down to size.  These provide all the fun of wallpaper without any of the labor and commitment.  You gotta love shortcuts!

The designs come in 5 different varieties – Ra-Ra, Dixon, Seymour, Racer and Gala.  Each design is also offered in a few different colors.

Painting with Ice Cubes

I saw the nifty idea of painting with ice cubes on the Craftzine Blog.  All that’s needed is a few drops of food coloring in your ice tray and a few sheets of paper as your canvas and you’re good to go.

My friends and I have created an arts and crafts group called the Kool Kids Kraft Klub and I’m thinking that this could be a perfect project for us to enjoy on a  warm summer afternoon.  No better way to get in touch with your inner child than creating some watercolor paintings!

Event: Life After Death – Fela Anikulapo Kuti

I recently went to the opening reception of the Life After Death exhibit at the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI) in midtown Manhattan.  Through the use of artwork and photography, the show is a tribute to legend that was and still is Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Here are some pics from the opening.

Left to right: Stephanie Matthews, me, Gabrielle Watson

Several of the artists from the exhibition will be holding a discussion from 6:30-8:30 tonight on how Fela’s life has influenced their work.  If you live in the NY area and can’t make it to tonight’s event, still be sure to come see the show before it ends on August 6th.

For more details, check out  the CCCADI site.

Dope Denim

I love all the funky washed denim that’s in style right now.  These were a few pairs of jeans that caught my eye on Karmaloop.  I’ve got a special place in my heart for the red and pink ones in the top left corner.  HOT!

Friday Video: Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson – Scream

Today marks the one year anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death so this week’s Friday Video is a tribute to one of his greatest works, Scream. Released in 1995 and directed by Mark Romanek, the video was a collaboration between Michael and his sister, Janet, as an aggressive response to the media’s coverage of the child sexual abuse accusations he faced in 1993.  At a cost of $7 million, this remains as the most expensive video of all time.

One of the things I usually reference with the Friday Videos are the bold use of color, but this particular video’s use of black, white and gray is impactful in demonstrating the song’s message and depicts Michael’s unstable state of mind upon developing its lyrics. The stark contrasts mark the insanity and the images (smashed guitars, morphing figures, shattered glass) further work to showcase the tumultuous time in Michael’s life.

Platform Shoes

Not sure if it’s the warm weather we’ve been having, but I’ve been feeling really sunny and yellow these past couple of days.

The dopeness of these Proenza Schouler platforms was too much for me to resist posting.  Thanks Sim!

Monochromatic Rooms

The thought of using one color to build a room is daunting to many, but when done correctly the end result is spectacular.

Here are a few things to think about when designing a monochromatic room:

  • Use varying shades of the same color.  If yellow, for example,  is your color of choice, try using a pale color for your curtains while adding brighter hues such as canary yellow to your furniture.
  • Utilize patterns.  By painting stripes on your wall or utilizing rugs in similar colors (with circles, lines, squares, etc.) can break up monotony.
  • Focus on lighting.  Adding lighting from various angles will provide a range of shadows that work to give the room added depth. This can be recessed lighting from the ceiling, standing lamps from the center or up-lights from the bottom.

Friday Video: Kanye West – The New Workout Plan

As a follow-up to yesterday’s Color 101 post on primary colors (red, yellow and blue), here is Kanye West’s video – The New Workout Plan. This video was released in 2004 from Kanye’s debut album, The College Dropout.

The content here centers on a satirical view of women who are focused solely on their appearance and financially rely on men to pamper them. The primary colors used play up the childish, fun and energetic nature of the song.

Enjoy and have a fantastic weekend!
