Exhibition: Graphic Design—Now in Production

If you live in NY or will be visiting at all this summer you should check out the Graphic Design—Now in Production exhibit on Governors Island. Co-organized by Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and the Walker Art Center, the exhibit explores some of the most vibrant sectors and genres of graphic design today. It runs from May 26, 2012 – Sept 3, 2012 and will be open weekends and holiday Mondays, 10am to 6pm.

I love Governors Island. It’s perfect for picnics and you can also rent bikes over there and ride around the park. It makes a really lovely day trip.

The video below gives a preview of the event. Also check Cooper-Hewitt’s site here for more details.

Ithaa Underwater Restaurant

Underwater dining anyone?

Located on Rangali Island off the southern coast of India, the Ithaa Underwater Restaurant is sunk about 16 feet below sea level at the Hilton Maldives Resort and Spa.  The design of the restaurant was completed by New Zealand design consultancy firm  MJ Murphy Ltd. Restaurant prices start at $120 for lunch and go up to around $220 to $250 for dinner.

The prices may be worth it for what is surely a rare opportunity to dine in such an environment. Definitely going on my bucket list.

Beck’s & Freegums: A Bit of Spacial Tension

Diggin’ this artwork from Miami based Alvaro Ilizarbe a.k.a. Freegums. Freegums is one of six artists who chosen to work with Beck’s on their Live Beyond Labels campaign. Each artist designed a limited edition label which is currently on sale. Artists include London musician M.I.A, LA based graphic design and artist Geoff McFetridge, NY based designer-calligrapher Aerosyn-Lex, and LA Performance artist Bert Rodriguez and Chicago scientific-sculptor Willy Chyr.

I love to see companies celebrate art like this and would love to get my hands on some of these collectibles.

Peep the  Freegums’ video below.

Friday Music Inspiration: Azealia Banks by Josh Skeritt

Awesome portrait of hip-hop’s latest sweetheart Azealia Banks by designer Josh Skeritt.

M.I.A. recently announced that she would be recording her “Bad Girls” remix with Azealia, Missy Elliot and Rye Rye. As a self-proclaimed Bad Girl (not really since the thought of jay-walking makes me nervous) I can’t wait to hear it.

See Josh’s portfolio here for more work. Have a great weekend!

Michael Weinstein NBA Team Logo Redesigns

There’s been a lot of recent discussion around basketball team logos since the Brooklyn Nets logo was unveiled last week. It seems that a great deal of people feel as though the design falls flat and is a bit boring. I have to agree. While I think the choice of black and white was a great decision, every other aspect of the design leaves you wanting more. I guess I expected something that would capture the essence of Brooklyn and New York as a whole.

Michael Weinstein has a project where he redesigned several of the NBA teams’ logos that have undergone changes in their identity. I’ve attached a few of them here. The left displays the current logos while the right has the remix.

I never noticed how popular red, white and blue was among teams until just now. Check out the rest of Michael’s redesigns here.

Inspirational Words for Those Tough Times

I rarely speak of myself here, but in addition to writing this awesome blog I’m a graphic design student studying to complete my portfolio this July. I recently left my full time job to give my new endeavor my all and while most days are full of excitement and enthusiasm for this new challenge others are more difficult where I have one of those “Did I do the right thing?!” meltdowns.

Yesterday was one of those days. I had been avoiding my schoolwork and refused to come near any of the design programs in fear that everything I do would “look dumb”. An absurd belief, but we’ve all been there. Since so many of you who read this blog are artists, designers or creative people in general, I thought I’d share some of the inspirational words I look to get through some of these times. I hope you find it helpful.

Life is Like Riding a Bicycle – words by Albert Einstein

Holstee Manifesto – words by Dave, Mike and Fabian

Inspiration and Creativity – unknown

For Beginners – words by Ira Glass

I can tell you that today is much better. I’ll be getting a new brief in class and I’m working on developing my personal brand identity. Super exciting.

Have a lovely and creative day!
